Cantilena draws its membership from a large area of central Norway. It was formed (with the name Orkla Korforening) over 20 years ago as a representative choir for the Orkla- og Gauldal Sangerforbund, which was the largest association of choirs in Norway. The choir's first conductors were Gerd Foros and then Philip Norman. Subsequently, the choir became independent of the choral association and changed its name to Cantilena. The present conductor, since 1995, is Bjørn Borge, who has been Director of Music of Trondheim Cathedral.
