i The Ad: DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

The church of St Mary & St John, part of the parish of Cowley St John, Oxford, seeks to appoint a dynamic Director of Music to lead its music ministry.  We are currently setting out on an exciting phase of renewal of both our ministry and our church fabric, and look for a new Director of Music keen to reinvigorate our current Sunday choral and congregational music (described below). Cowley

St John Parish

Our parish was formed in 1870 from the historic parish of Cowley St James to serve Oxford?s rapidly growing, mostly working class, eastern suburb. Its first incumbent was Fr Richard Benson, also superior of the newly formed Anglican monastic community, the Society of St John the Evangelist (the ?Cowley Fathers?). This inheritance continues today in a wholly ?inclusive? expression of Catholic Anglicanism, marked by a strong eucharistic focus, commitment to the Daily Offices, and outreach to the poor, homeless, mentally ill, and new immigrant communities in East Oxford. The parish consists of two churches ? St Mary and St John on the Cowley Road, and the former ?mission? church of St Alban?s nearby in Charles Street. Attendance at the main (10.45) sung eucharist at St Mary and St John is currently ca.

50-100, depending on the season. Attendees are overwhelmingly local residents, and although the area is rapidly gentrifying, Cowley St John is Oxfordshire?s most economically, socially, and racially diverse parish. We are particularly keen to enhance our ministry to the area?s large population of students and younger families.

St Mary & St John

Church

For his new church of St Mary and St John, Father Benson commissioned as architect Alfred Mowbray, son of the Oxford Movement publisher and printer Alfred Richard Mowbray. Building commenced in 1875, with consecration in 1883, followed by the addition of the west tower by Mowbray in 1892-3. Large vestries were added in 1912. Due to lack of funds, much of the decorative stonework in the church was left unfinished, but the building is an impressive architectural essay in Anglo-Catholic theology and liturgy by design, rather than adaptation, with its voluminous nave and aisles dramatically focussed on the climax of the elevated chancel, high altar, and carved and painted reredos

(1918) by Cecil Hare, assistant to G F Bodley.

Music at St Mary &

St John

The Organ. Before 1950, a series of smaller organs were housed above the north or south chancel, with choir stalls below, all since removed. The present organ of 38 stops and three manuals is a fine instrument, well-suited to the large volume of the building. Its origins (ca. 1850) were as the instrument for Oxford?s St Michael-at-the-Northgate, but rebuilt with three manuals by Norman and Beard (1914), and brought to St Mary and St John in 1940. It was entirely overhauled at the cost of some ?200,000 in 2010, and is in excellent working order, housed in a gallery above the west end.

The

Choir  During the heyday of attendance numbers, ca. 1900-70, the church had a large robed choir, and from that period dates an enviable music library of four-part ?cathedral? repertoire. At present there is a very dedicated, but very small, core of singers (4-6, often just short of

SATB) who meet before the 10.45 service to rehearse hymns, psalms, and an anthem (usually taken from the Oxford Anthem Book). The choir presently sings from the west gallery around the organ console, with occasional forays to the north aisle at a grand piano (Bluthner).

The Congregation  Service music is sung congregationally (at present Murray, with Merbecke in Advent and Lent), as are Psalms (Anglican chant). We are a hymn-loving parish, and have recently invested in a full new set of the 2013 edition of Ancient & Modern (words-only for pew copies; full music for choir).

i The Ad: St John the Divine is one of three churches in the Richmond Team Ministry.  Its ethos is Liberal Catholic, inclusive and welcoming.

The liturgical style is quite formal, but far from stuffy!  Music has always played an important part in the life of the church, and is much appreciated by those who come.  The unrobed choir is small, but loyal and capable, and with a wide repertoire.

St John's has a historically

interesting and unique Beale and Thynne organ dating from 1896.  It is maintained under contract with Harrison & Harrison, who visit at least twice a year.  The church has an excellent acoustic and is also a popular concert venue.  There is a grand piano in the church, as well as a smaller portable keyboard in the choir vestry.

We are now seeking a

new Director of Music, from April 2018 (after Easter).  The main duties

are:

- playing the organ at the 11.00 Sung Eucharist on Sundays and at occasional Sunday or weekday evening services on holy days and festivals, as required, and either playing, conducting or singing when the three churches and choirs come together for a Team Service 2-3 times a year

- leading a choir practice on Sunday mornings at 10.00am (no midweek rehearsal) and before major festivals, and directing the choir in rehearsal and performance

 - preparing music lists, usually a

month or a quarter in advance

-  developing the current choir's

skills and promoting the choir to potential new members

-

developing the capacity of the whole congregation - including younger

members - to engage with the musical life of the church

- first

refusal for weddings and funerals, with appropriate fees on top of

regular salary (in line with RSCM rates, currently ?3,552 a year)

This post could suit someone who has existing work commitments,

musical or otherwise.

If you'd like to apply, discuss the post

further, or pay an exploratory visit to the church, please contact the

Team Vicar.

i The Ad: St. Nicholas' Church, Godstone is looking for an Organist and Choir Director We are seeking to appoint a permanent Director of Music for our RSCM robed choir.  Our current organist will be moving abroad, and so cannot continue in the role.

We have a two-manual, 21-stop

pipe organ which is regularly maintained (entry in National Pipe Organ Register at http://www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=N13720), and an enthusiastic robed choir with 6-12 members. The choir is relaxed and friendly, and currently sings SATB settings. I believe that there is the potential to help the choir grow with the right leadership. The choir rehearsal is on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm.

We sing a mix of old and

new hymns. Our regular sung Eucharist is at 10.30am, and uses Common Worship liturgy.

We are looking for an organist who can sustain our current services. We have, in the past, been able to put choristers through the RSCM exams, and would like to be able to reintroduce this in the future. Payment would be based on RSCM rates.

There is the option

of playing at the weddings and funerals, but we can rely on other organists if this was a problem.

LAGOS ACADEMY OF MUSIC - TEACHER RECRUITMENT

The Lagos Academy of Music wishes to recruit a number of piano, organ, singing and music theory teachers for its 3 teaching locations in Nigeria’s biggest city.

The majority of our students are either beginners or have reached a standard somewhere between Grades 1 and 5 ABRSM.

Most students have experienced classical music through their churches and tend to favour playing church music above other genres.

We seek teachers who are accustomed to teaching music to adult beginners and who have the energy and vision to introduce great sacred and secular classical music to our students.

Church organists, choir directors, vocal trainers and pianists are particularly encouraged to apply to us.

Teachers working for the Lagos Academy of Music will receive a competitive salary (to be negotiated) as well as accommodation in an apartment shared with other teachers. Transport to/from our buildings will also be provided as will visa support and initial flights. As a guide, our ex-pat teachers have tended to earn approximately US$1500 tax free per month, most of which they have been able to save.

Teachers should, in the first instance, send an expression of interest to Paul by email: englishvalencia@yahoo.com Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have about these roles.

i The Ad: An excellent opportunity for a Director of Music has arisen at the beautiful village church of St Mary The Virgin in Clifton Village, Nottingham. The church stands only a few miles from Junction 24 of the M1, is Grade 1 listed, is a popular location for weddings, with fabulously designed acoustics and boasting a gorgeous 1973 two manual and pedal board, 11 stop, tracker action Marcussen pipe organ (NPOR

N0887) and a grand piano, both of which are maintained to be in exceptional condition.

The church is looking for an enthusiastic Musical Director to drive music forward in the Parish to include the creation of a regular basic SATB choir and maybe a children?s choir.

They are looking to form secure links with music in the local schools and Trent University whose campus sits right next door to the village!

There is usually one service per week apart from festival weeks. The church is well known to be a local concert venue and the successful applicant will head up designing a program of musical events throughout the year to include assistance with the successful music festival and the coordination of visiting choirs.

The church is within the same

parish as Clifton?s Holy Trinity Church where a Father Willis organ sits waiting to be installed into the organ gallery and the successful applicant will be key to leading this project to a successful outcome.

Skills in modern worship music would be an additional benefit in order to support the musical worship style in this second church on occasion.

A Sub Organist is already in place to support the successful applicant with choir accompaniment and holidays, etc. If you are keen to forward your career as a Director of Music in a prominent village church that holds music centrally to its success and outreach program and you are reliable and passionate about both choral music and traditional worship with an eye on the modern then this may just be the role that you are looking for.
